Feedback ยท "Story" version of role play for character information. (rejected)

Rather than tabs or drop downs , I would like to see a simplified version of the role plays for storing character information. For the purpose of talking about this feature, I will be calling it the "Story" section. It would be stored in the same place as the role plays on a user's profile, and therefore could be easily accessed, and linked from within their profile. The feature would allow profiles to remain small, neat, and friendly to outsiders, while offering users an outlet to write extended stories, character diaries, pseudo documentaries, etc.

This "Story" would remove the options for setting, additional characters, and other standard options. It should be open for edits at least to a degree, as a user may wish to edit and update the information about their character. It would allow people to enter as much or as little information about their character as desired, and to separate that information by creating, and titling various posts.

I am supporting this even if only because I want some way of doing it and this one seems to be least controversial.

This "Story" would remove the options for setting, additional characters, and other standard options

What do you mean by this?

Roel

I suppose what it means is - make Roleplay have a 'post as story' option that pretty much makes it only have one space for writing and maybe interests attached - no inviting people. no additional posts etc, And it actually should be handled (the story) in a way that only thing you have is a title, interests and setting post - because that one can be edited infinitely, without need of adding new elements to the system.

Roel has the general concept. The idea is that the extra parts, which are required to invite others to join in on a role play, are somewhat visually unappealing if one is attempting to create an extension of their character on a role play page.

Johnny Anderson

It was actually comments from chat and some of the people there who said that they would not really like the setting. I believe Anna was one of those, so we may have to get a more complete commentary from her.

Of course, then I would want some way to make an RP look differently to a degree. Like once you lock it down, it loses any irrelevant items at the top. Or a recent suggestion is to set an RP as a story, so then it would be displayed in a simpler style, without the Setting post, involved users, Interests section, etc.

Roel

I think that you might very well write setting for a story, then do empty line, horizontal rule, then empty line and it is all better - my suggestion comes from the fact that we do not have any plans of unlimited editing in roleplay (at least not anytime soon) so using Setting box, which has them unlimited anyway, would generally be of little effort and comfortable

Roel

Last time I was part of discussion about editing after roleplay is finished was that it would most probably be one-per-post edit. So... that still needs a workaround if you want to keep changing without deleting them all the time.

Not sure I agree with a roleplay item that doesn't have interests or anything (the features of a roleplay, basically). One of the reasons I encourage people to put their stuff into a roleplay model --- now --- is that when it is appropriately tagged, people could search for backstories or literature they'd like to read and find your profiles through that. Not being to invite or other such things would come basically "for free" with it being in the finished state.

Johnny Anderson

Actually, still having the interests might be useful for people to find the page. The problem I see with that is if a person is writing out a complete character history, the list of interests might be a bit overwhelming and therefore not useful.

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

Still don't see why you'd want a less functional, less visible way to list your character's backstory. The interest list is only there if you go and edit, it's not like it smacks you everytime.

Roel

Interests should be there even if only to make the thing appear in searches - it would make it add to the amount of text people can find and evaluate you basing on them.
And if it was listed as third option in searches 'find stories' or something like that - I think people would be pretty much ready for the fact that things will be massively tagged?
If you ever think some part is too small to be of interest, you can just not add the tag for that specific interest - like not having 'combat' if there is pretty much one short mention of it in the whole text.

Right, I'm just trying to figure out why this is needed (or wanted). From the suggestion body, this is a roleplay which:

  • is displayed in the same way and the same place on the profile
  • offers nothing further than roleplays do now
  • does not allow for things like setting, interest tagging, etc.
  • cannot be opened for anyone to play with

I just don't see the value-add in having this kind of roleplay model in the system. Everything that this "adds" seems like it should be properties of the finished roleplay state instead.

Ok, the more I think about this the less I like it. If the problem is that we don't feel it is properly communicated to use roleplays to hold character information, let's work on the roleplay creator (litphoria.com). If the problem is that we think that these plays will get lost in your other roleplays, let's create some way to feature them. Let's not gimp the roleplay system like this, though.

Changes have occurred since this - it is now possible to freely edit posts of roleplays in the "edit mode", rendering this obsolete. Therefore, I am rejecting this.
