Half Heart Preference for Traits (in review)
master of 2 children
Instead of it being a straight up Yes/No could there be an undecided option for specific traits. Like if I'm interested in a specific set of settings for my character but have a few that I don't prefer but I'm still open to discussing an RP involving them or if I have specific builds for my partners that I prefer but some that I have to be in the mood for or some things that I only like in specific contexts.

For completion's sake. If you have a character that has an extremely specific setting in mind but are open to other things besides the setting, you're kind of fucked when it comes to completion status.
So? Your completion will only be hurt if you're trying for 100% or platinum for whatever reason, and even then, preferences are binary. Either you will play with something or you won't.
Completion systems make a lot of people want to try for 100%. The idea that someone might be "done" at 80% or 90% is contrary to the completion system's signal they're not done yet - it doesn't feel complete yet because the system is saying so. I still have the desire to hit 100% sitting there, I just put it aside because I can't without degrading the truthfulness of my profile. (And it would involve using traits I consider as garbage for this character, like Charisma.)
Personally though, completion aside, I'd use something like this for some of the preferences I've left off, like micro/macro.
Yeah, I would like this for hyper sizes and equines mostly. I'm not in the mood for them all the time, they're a "Maybe, ask me if I'm in the mood" sort of deal. If they're completely off I feel it will discourage people who are into hyper or play equine characters from bookmarking or sending me friend requests because they simply don't know how to react to the character.
I think that this is a larger problem for the whole preference system as opposed to traits.. Take something like Sexual Experience. Most of them are pretty standard and people absolutely don't care what a character has for it. But some people have a virginity interest that could be Core or Mandatory. There's no way to sort the first group from the second, even though that's possible for every Interest.
It is possible we deem it necessary to move preferences into a "layered" system like interests, just we run into a few issues doing such, so we need to think carefully about new lists like these.
Probably a little late coming into this, but I'd definitely be in favour of a half-heart level. To me, the full-heart/yes seems like something to use for things that you really like and want to emphasize, rather than just 'something I will play with', and it bugs me that I might be missing out on showing up in a search just because I don't especially love tall people, for instance. A middle-tier for just straight 'yes' rather than 'this is a preference' would be really helpful.
Meleda, I usually give over a month for needs discussion
items to get all possible voices, so you're not quite late.
I'm still not too sold on a half-heart though. Are we saying this is going to be something akin to yes
whereas the full heart would be a core
or mandatory
? I'm not really too convinced by people wanting a maybe
, but I can see having two levels of "yes I will do this", only one to separate "this is really important to me".
Current into/not-into selection seems too black&white to me for various reasons already stated by others. I, like others, would prefer there was an option of "this won't turn me down but I'm not going to be all over you for it". It's the "I will try" choice for traits, neutral opinion you know. It feeds my completionist sensibilities without forcing me to put them in liked against my preferences just because I don't want to shut them out.
I'm with May, I don't know whether to put furries into like or don't like for this character. I might try stuff with them but I'm not sure how my mileage will go.
I also don't mind if I show up in searches for people into furries, so this is OK as just a visual thing.
Well, the point is, that I don't only have one character. Which one I will use to ask you for RP depends (also) on your preferences. Who is not a good match for Desdemona is maybe the perfect match for another char of mine. Even in a normal D&D RP I will choose my character also by what the other players have and want and not say: either you play with my dwarf or not.
Showing up in searches is not the only problem. I use gender preferences to sort out profiles which are not interesting and that's after all the idea of "trait compatibility".
Just gonna give this idea my approval. There are a lot of traits on my preferences I've left unlisted just cuz I don't really feel like I prefer them one way or another. And yet the completion in me is kinda irked that there's not a more neutral option when selecting preferred traits in RP partners.. Something to show "Yeah, I don't mind these traits in a character, but I'm not particularly chomping at the bit to play with someone who has these traits either" would be very much appreciated.
Got something to say?
