Feedback ยท Let me see the most recent posts while I'm roleplaying, not just the last page (implemented)

When I'm in a forum roleplay, I want to always see the last 10-20 posts (or however many go on a page) while I'm connected.

Roleplays currently suffer from a forum behavior holdover we don't need to replicate here: whenever we make it to the next page, all posts before the most recent one vanish into past pages and I just see a page with one post on it. It slows down responding because I now have to interact with pagination to see what was said before that. When I'm roleplaying with two other people I want to see both of their posts side by side, so writing a post following a page change is made harder than it should be - the last two posts are on different pages.

For new users, it can be plain unexpected - a friend of mine who joined recently asked where all the posts had disappeared to after this happened for the first time.

There's really no reason to do this I can think of other than "because that's how forums usually work", but we don't aim to work the way forums usually do - we have live posting and stuff.

Can we have a "Most recent 20" page that people connected to the roleplay can use, or something like that? Or for connected users, paginate back from the current post or something?

Looks like that one just wants one or two posts through some kind of delayed pagination mechanism.

I just straight up want to see the last page's worth of posts (I.e. definitely more than two), so no. Like how chat always shows me the most recent 100 always always - why can't roleplay show me the most recent 20?

Like, assuming I am in a roleplay with 46 posts, 20 per page. When I'm in a live roleplay, I don't want to faff around with pages, I just want to read recent stuff and reply. I'll interact with pages when I want to really dig back far, or when I'm reading a roleplay I'm not participating in. So this 46-post roleplay could have these pages: 1, 2, 3, most recent 20, and while I'm connected I'm on that last one, which just shows me posts 27 thru to 46.

Hm, a floating page then, like a chat (the hybridization continues!). That is a novel introduction to the discussion, so I will not close as a duplicate.

Mmhm, that sounds like a good word for it.

Would love to see this. Always so irritating at page-break-time.

Seems easy to implement with current paging. Basically, for two or more pages, the first page always shows the first-twenty posts, the 2nd page always shows the 2nd-twenty, and so on. The last page always displays the last twenty posts. Sure, between the last page and the second from last page, there could be up to 19 duplicates, but I can live with that!

PS: ... Or the 2nd from last page is always a 'flex' page that only shows the non-duplicate posts, so it would flex from being 1 post long to 20 posts long. Then when paging through, you are never jarred by duplicate posts, and the last page always has 20 posts.

I think that since the new chatbox solves these problems, this feedback won't be relevant anymore.
