Feedback ยท Redo the "what are you?" traits from another angle (needs discussion)

The species, skin/body type, and supernatural nature traits are a poor way to slice things up, and the insistence everyone must pick one and only one from each trait isn't working in practice. That left people pigeonholing new things wherever they could to get a combination which worked for them, blurring those four traits together and making things very confusing. Many choices are often redundant, obvious, or irrelevant, and what type of skin you have isn't even important (unless it's answering some bigger question, like "you're a robot").

Instead of all that, let's focus on letting people give a straightforward answer to a straightforward question. That question is: What kind of thing are you? I think that comes down to what human/animal/other thing you look like, and some extra descriptors we've got lying around between multiple traits. Also, your powers are something totally separate.

We'd implement that with traits that ask the following:

  • What do you look like? human, demihuman, animal.
    • If I'm human, I look like this ethnicity: asian, european ...
    • If I'm demihuman, I look like I'm: elf, goblin, kemonomimi ...
      • If you're kemonomimi, you get to also pick an animal type (and maybe a human ethnicity?).
    • If I'm an animal, I look like this real/fantasy animal: canine, feline, dragon, naga, beast ...
  • I'm also one or more of these (pick none, one or more): humanoid, anthro, feral, taur, golem, alien, pokemon, robot, plant, angel, demon, deity, vampire, undead, magical, goo, monster.
  • I have these powers (if any): divine, demonic, magical, psionic, shapeshifter, superhuman, technological.

These would replace species, body/skin type, and supernatural nature. The first part borrows from my two-step species selection suggestion.

The process is: you pick human, demihuman, or animal. Then you say what kind you are, or you say "none of these" and it's left at that (you're just left at "human", "demihuman", or "animal"). Then, you add some other descriptors about yourself.

The powers should just go into a Powers trait. The rest I'm not sure how you'd name them - maybe you'd just have one special "body" or "species" or "appearance" trait that works differently to the rest. (It's worth the special handling to sort this stuff out cleanly for people.)

This is a draft and I could do with suggestions to improve it. In particular, I'm not sure what to do with things that don't look like anything - amorphous blobs, plants that actually just look like plants, gaseous creatures, etc. Maybe there would be an "Other" in your very first choice, filled with... something.

What it looks like on profiles

I'll combine those things together. The end result might look like the following.

Arcanine anthro:

Body: Animal, Canine, Anthro, Pokemon
Powers: Magical

A god:

Body: Human, Asian, Humanoid, Deity
Powers: Divine

Kitsune kemonomimi:

Body: Demihuman, Kemonomimi, Asian, Fox, Humanoid
Powers: Magical, Shapeshifter

A robot:

Body: Demihuman, Humanoid, Robot
Powers: Technological

These characters get to say as much or as little is relevant. They're searchable by the right things. They're not forced to pick four specific choices from four cross-sections which don't accurately map to them.

I'm also one or more of these (pick none, one or more): humanoid, anthro, feral, taur, golem, alien, pokemon, robot, plant, angel, demon, deity, vampire, undead, magical, goo, monster.

That's a multiselect trait. I am not opposed to multiselect traits but I think those should be discussed seperately. For example if I have this: Body: Animal, Canine, Anthro, Pokemon what do I need a species trait for? Or does the species appear at 'Body:' at the profile?

You don't need a species trait, the species trait would get replaced by the stuff in this proposal. So would body type, skin type, and supernatural nature.

I see. Question is, what is the benefit of the "human, demihuman, animal" choice then? For a human it's easy anyway. I just have to search for human. The demihuman list contains everything: animals, fantasy races, ethnicity.

The main benefit comes from the multiple-select trait. For this you splitted up the traits. Now we have Deity and you split it up into "God" and "Divine powers". With the traits we have atm your version would look like that:

Body: Human, Human(oid). Powers: Deity

Yours looks better because you added "Asian" and "Divine" but adding traits is not the same as improving the trait-system. This is meant as constructive criticism. I support adding traits, improving the trait system and I'm not opposed to multiple-select traits but I think it makes more sense not to discuss this all at once.

The alternative to your multiple-select trait is to add "God" to species and an "Ethnicity" trait. Then we have:

Species: God, Body type: Human, Ethnicity: Asian, Sup-nat Power: Divine

That's what is to compare to:

Body: Human, Asian, Humanoid, Deity, Powers: Divine

This may have as much benefit as having a two or three-step feature for species. Because this seems more simple and may provide more use even in the search feature, and there are a loot of species, types, and ethnicities to even cover.
