Feedback ยท Fixed-position banner for save/delete on profile editor (in review)

What it says on the tin; it would be nice if the save/delete bar stayed on the screen as you scroll down the page, to prevent having to scroll all the way back to the top of the page after you have finished making your changes.

Alternatively, a second copy of the "save" button at the bottom of the page would be a decent stopgap.

I was thinking of suggesting a second copy of the save button at the bottom to save all the up scrolling. This would work as well.

I want this! \o/

Not a super huge fan of "fixed" things. Can I get some opinions about this?

Roel

I find it a tiny bit annoying to scroll all the way up after making some changes at very bottom of profile. With how big it can get, some sort of help in saving easily would be nice. I actually imagined the banner that scrolls with the screen too,

Johnny Anderson

If you do not want the fixed banner, would a repeat of the banner at the end of the profile work?

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

I'm not against the banner, I just think it should be used carefully. It'd take up a lot of space phones, for example, and is not something you'd need to constantly interact with.

Roel

Any way to make it know person is on mobile and not pop up?

Velus

I personally very much dislike fixed bars like this on sites. Considering I edit my profiles infrequently, scrolling back up to the top after some changes is not a big deal for me. In total the floating bar would probably only save me a few seconds a year.

It can make it not pop-up on phones, but that's not really my objection. Something fixed should be something you interact with constantly or have the potential to interact with constantly. For example, a save button might not be something good to have fixed, but a quick nav might (that takes you to each of the sections).

Johnny Anderson

I tend to edit an fidget with my characters a lot, and the long scroll to the top gets frustrating. I think that either a save option at the bottom, or some quick navigation tool to jump between sections would offer an ease on sanity in the long run.

Velus

Taking up some spare room on one side for a floating fixed table of contents could be a helpful possibility, with an accompanying save button at the bottom.

On phones, this could be a floating top bar with a show/hide menu, and the top bar saying for content what section you're currently viewing. (See Bootstrap's ScrollSpy.)

I am unblocking this. This will most likely get implemented as some kind of banner.

For this, I don't think the whole save/delete bar should follow us. Maybe the save button, but I don't want the delete button following us all around character editing! That thing's dangerous! It needs to stay put in a place we'd only access it deliberately.

Lich Community Manager

If we don't have delete though, we'd just have Save floating around following you. That might be useful, but is there other stuff that should follow?

The character name and their avatar comes to mind.
