Feedback ยท Profile Header Images (accepted)

This took a little magic in photoshop, but this is what I envisioned when we were talking about it in the Main Chat. Magic!. Font for the actual text is broken, but that's because I was lazy and couldn't get it perfect.

Implementing it might be another issue. What I had to do was get a gradient transparency going on the four sides of the image and plop a black, transparent overlay on the image to have the text show up better.

The intention is, as WA discussed, to recoup some of the loss in customization for profiles, while still keeping the sleek, minimalist design of the site.

I missed the convo in chat, but I gotta be honest that I am not really for this. It 1- give me a pretty strong social networking/ face book vibe. And 2- feels like it would potentially cause major issues with some of the basic color schemes; if for example the header image caused text for certain users to become invisible.

I agree with the concept but not necessarily with this implementation for a few reasons, such as:

  1. font would need a text shadow to be legible over most images ... there's none of that anywhere else on the site
  2. images with images on them feels weird to me, even with the clear border

I'll like to hear any opinions on this though, as ultimately this will probably be something a lot of users use and so your usage of this use-case will have to be usable for everyone else.

I think icons on banner actually look very nice, but I have to admit the problem with text over the header initially escaped me.
Though I think it would be better to figure out how to make them visible rather than search for different location of the banner as it wouldn't really fit as logically anywhere else?

As for what Johhny said about social-networking vibe: is it really an issue? It gives the profile an additional touch and profiles looking a bit like on those sites shouldn't be a problem - we are supposedly a community and some social aspect exists, which makes me think such vibe is better than worse.

Having the choice to put a header if a user wants too is good. It won't be for everyone, but it doesn't really do any harm and adds a bit of style.
