When an avatar has no image, it normally displays an name or a default image within the avatar box across the site. The exception is for the avatar selection link in the Inbox region at the bottom of RPs and chats. If no image has been selected, the whole link is just gone and there is less feedback about which profile you are posting with, and no way to select from down there. You have to go back to the top.

The selector there is based off of the selector in the header, so it will probably display a plain name instead of the default image. More useful that way.
