Always show Giving/Taking Icon Indicators (implemented)
Prior to the N/A (hide indicator)
choice in the Giving/Taking selector, the Giving/Taking/Both icons would be hidden for an Interest based on if you have either the D/s Role
or Top/Bottom Role
Trait, and what they were set to, i.e., Top
/Bottom
/Switch
. With the addition of the N/A choice, which hides the icon to indicate that the Interest is N/A for that profile with respect to Giving/Taking, there is an ambiguity created. There is no longer a way to know whether a profile's particular interest is in a default state with respect to their D/s preference or has set the Interest to N/A for Giving/Taking.
Furthermore, it was always not in the interest of making things plain and clear to hide these indicators. Nothing was gained, and information that would speed an understanding of a character was hidden. You have to go up and reference one of two traits to figure out if Interests with no indicator were defaulting to Giving, Taking, or Both. If the indicators are all shown in the Interests section you'll be able to just SEE that a person is primarily Top, Bottom, or Switch.
But now, you simply can't know if someone chose to set some of them to N/A.

It creates ambiguity if someone uses it incorrectly. If used how it was intended --- interests in no, interests which don't really make sense to "give" or "take" --- then there is no ambiguity.
I'm unblocking just because I've heard no further objections, but moving to awaiting endorsement
to show that I would need community support to make such a change.

If I go look at any profile, there is no visible difference between an Interest that is, for example, "Give or Take" for a Switch, and an Interest set to "N/A". How is that not ambiguous?
And the whole scheme of hiding symbols based on whether I've chosen a Top/Bottom role or D/s role is not intuitive. Why you are in love with that scheme. It is quite problematic. A new user has to somehow learn that either of two traits will set one of three states to be default and hide the symbols for that state. To what purpose? What does that accomplish? It's not 'cool'. It doesn't look more aesthetic. It's simply an obfuscation, now made even worse by the whole N/A thing.
If you set the default symbol to be grayed-out but visible, then it would indicate which Interests are set to defaults Giving and/or Taking, and it would visually indicate better, to those in the know, that a given character has a Top role Trait, and that specific Interests are different than default, and that certain Interest are obviously set to N/A.
Hmm. Grayed-out but visible might work.
With some profile updates I've done this, but gone with the "grayed out" approach so as to avoid creating too much visual noise on the screen.
Got something to say?
