Is this meaningfully and usefully distinct from art
?
I would rather disagree? Actors are still very much people of art - what comes to mind immediately when seeing entertainment is 'less artsy' sort of performing mostly - so circuss artists (even though 'artists'), people involved in TV shows, maybe stand-up comedians... I don't know, it is hard for me to come up with more or less 'contained' definition for this.
I have no idea how sex worker
came up here. I guess that used to be a category? I can't find any reference to it. I'm not opposed to sex work
as a category, especially give Cressy's profile, and the focus of many RPs, but that seems awfully specific. Art
in the singular implies traditional 'art' specifically, not all the range of 'Arts', which itself does not encompass all Entertainment or entertainers. (I refuse to recognize people like Beiber or any Kardashian as 'artists', but then that is just me making a commonly-made observation.)
If you want to change Art
to Arts and Entertainment
, that would work well. Arts
and Entertainment
separate also works for me. Personally, I'm going to suggest Engineering
, but that is where we might have Science and Engineering
instead, maybe.
Back when we talked about this Trait and Categories for it, I was a bit discouraged from making two-words categories, so I tried to condense them into one words - reason for things like 'Science' and such. Just to give some context.
As far as Sex worker
goes, it is in queue as Sex
now - changed because of me, though after thinking more I would probably agree it needs a bit better name.
Cressida's main work falls under Entertainment specifically. It would be a too-enormous of a stretch to call her an "artist", and it would be especially misleading to place her under an Art
category, especially given the current, fairly narrow definition attached to Art
. She would also fall under Sex work
, but that isn't quite appropriate for her main work as an exotic dancer or stripper. Yes, it is somewhat sex-related, but not really, truly. Plus, as much as I like the idea of a Sex work
category, I have to admit that it is unusually specific, and invites the creation of 40 or 50 categories for this Trait. I'm thinking more in terms with the official employment categories used by the government for employment statistics, thus things like Hospitality, Food Service, Entertainment, Engineering, and so on. Sex work
would be a sub-set of Entertainment
, so it could be covered by that. Personally, I'd probably vote for both of them, given the chance, to be honest, but I could live without Sex work
if I have Entertainment
.
Truth be told, I think back then I tried to make Art & Entertainment
or something like that. And current description of Art
was supposed to catch Entertainment
too, but I apparently failed at it. I would prefer for some categories to be broadened in a way, rather than having too many of them. It is supposed to be as general as possible - including this one.

Hmmm. Using this instead of sex worker
may be more appropriate and cover more things, but I'm still not entirely sure it needs to be separate from art
. I guess it may be useful to find people who are performance artists in entertainment
.
If you want to say that all actors, performers, and every sort of 'entertainer' falls under the category of 'artist', then you probably need to change art
to arts
, and edit the definition to match the intention. As it is, it is singular and thus implies only the most common and narrow definition of art, which is not really contradicted by the current definition for art
. Dancers, circus entertainers (and circus-freaks for that matter), piano-players, opera singers, and more are all entertainers, but it is often a huge stretch to say they work in an "artistic, creative" field. These are all entertainers that perform rote kind of work, where someone else, often a very, very long time ago, was the one who was 'creative'. But maybe Arts
and a very broadened definition that includes a mention of "actors, singers, and entertainers" would work OK. I just think Entertainer
is perfectly generic and distinctive, hence the reason you always see the two terms spoken together: "Arts and Entertainment," making them one category by explicitly conjoining them. If ease of searching wasn't a thing, I'd suggest A&E
, or the full phrase.

I am unblocking this per the discussion. This may allow us to remove sex worker
.
