Preferably mental gender, and either through a symbol or a colour of the name - the idea is just to make it easier for people to get the most basic information which is "which pronoun is applicable to be used here?". I myself like to have it laid out to me, instead of loading up a profile.
Should be especially useful for mobile device users.

This is something I kind of liked about slimCat; being able to see a symbol next to someone's name so I knew how to address them properly in chat. I personally want to avoid colors simply because I dislike seeing a rainbow of colors in a chat, but some people like that!
Gender symbol (en.wikipedia.org) -- symbols would make it easier if you were colourblind. More accessible.
