Today, a new user expressed frustration with Litphoria's auto conversion of /me's to *'s. They did not get the memo that we use the latter to emote here, and did not get the signal from the auto conversion. To them, the site was just replacing a perfectly good emote command with asterisks for some arcane reason, as far as I understand it.
Probably the site could take an extra step to deal with this issue: the first three (or so) occasions an account confronts this conversion, make an obvious and dismissible message appear above the text input telling them:
On Litphoria, you emote by simply starting off your post with a section wrapped in asterisks (
*
), which italicize that text. The/me
command does not exist here. You can include non-italic sections in your post too.
After seeing this message on three occasions, that account will never be bugged by it again, since at that point they may be doing this deliberately and knowingly. (I do that sometimes.)
If they encounter this conversion multiple times within the same message, they should see the alert each time but it should count as only one occasion for the full message. So it takes running into this on three different messages before it stops telling you.
