It's an umbrella term (and one fairly commonly used, at least where I'm from) for a number of smaller things. Breath-play, gun-play, knife-play, fire-play, etc are the bigger things within it, but I've seen enough individual things inside it that it can't be broken down into just those sub-factions.

Yes and no? The interests might be worthwhile on their own, but what people take from them tends to be different. Edgeplay as a whole is centred around that idea of risk/danger/etc, whereas the sub-interests tend to be fetishizing the tools themselves. There's an element of danger to knife-play, for example, but it's more about the sensation of the knife on skin, how it cuts, etc, depending on how you handle it. Plus, there's all the things that are, again, waaaaay too specific that could fall under this but nothing else. The seminar-thing I wound up in on how to do edge-play as safely as possible used a chainsaw, for example.
