Could we go with D&D 4e's version of Neutral for this one: Unaligned?
Regardless of feelings about any edition. It would work better here, I think. It is people who have not chosen to take a stand for good or evil. It implies a lack of choice, so it also suits people who might prefer to answer 'none'.
Separately I think we should drop the mention of lacking conviction to make personal sacrifices. That works in heroic battle fantasy, less so when we're just talking about relatively ordinary, if a bit larger than life, people like in typical Disney movies. Ordinary neutral or unaligned people make small sacrifices all the time, they just don't make the enormous ones fantasy heroes fighting a war against demons or the undead must make.
What would you suggest for the definition?
Hm. Something like...
A character unaligned with either good or evil, due to being uninclined toward either, or having not made a choice to stand for either side. An unaligned person doesn't actively seek to cause others harm nor wish them ill, but they also don't go out of their way to put themselves at risk without hope of reward.
I somewhat agree with Unaligned instead of Neutral. Plus "A character unaligned with either good or evil" sounds more natural to me than "A character with the Neutral moral alignment". Even if you still wanted to use Neutral, I'd slightly change the beginning to "A character with a neutral moral alignment." I just feel like neutral could be pretty vague and mean different things to different people, so referring to it as The Neutral alignment sounds like it's referring to something that's too specific, too rigid.
I do have a case where the term "neutral" is precisely more fitting than "unaligned", butI feel like this might be a specific case. There does need to be -something- as middleground; I would suggest a more succinct definition, regardless of the term:
An character unaligned with either good or evil. A neutral character has not made a choice to stand for good or evil, or has chosen to remain impartial towards both.
I put Aersynn's definition. I don't like the term 'unaligned.' If someone wants to make a new feedback, then go for it, but I'm not going to.
I will then, since I do not think Neutral offers as much utility here. Totally relevant to D&D, not so relevant to other narratives.
Got something to say?
