Feedback ยท Embed cover images into settings (accepted)

Something like this except in a much more limited format. I would like the ability to embed one to four images strictly into the setting section of role plays. I feel like this would help particularly in group style role plays, to give a clear visual of the particular setting. Whether it is a matter of layout (I.E. the space station, apartment building, or school), or something broader like an image of the waterfall in the glade, the sunlight cresting over the mountain, etc. I feel that a few, minor visual accents could really help to make an rp more inviting. After all, painting the picture of the building is fun, writing and reading the layout of each and every room can be a bit daunting and tedious. These are meant to be like the map at the front of the tolkien books, an easy visual reference that does not detract from the writing. They could be full size images, or clickable thumbnails, with a specific layout that works with the look of this site.

This would be very cool! For Honnouji Academy, the Kill la Kill room, we would probably dig out some images of the KLK setting to attach.

This can be solved by simply putting links there (I think that would work?) for rpers (potential or current) to click. While that wouldn't actually add the visual right there, it is both feasible with the current framework, wouldn't require any changes, and keeps in the current feel of the site. (I'm not 100% about my last point)

If roleplays got to have images attached like profiles it would probably feel familiar. ;) I'm not attached to these being embedded in a setting description.

I know that links can be added, but there is something about having the image right there, hosted on the sight. I like the concept of adding a few images to the role play in the same way that we add images to our profiles now, with simple cropping tools that create small icons to go to the full image on site.

The ability to embed images in a roleplay did have some disagreement before (some of which I agreed with). This is a less objectionable way to go about doing it, as it would only allow images to be embedded in the setting, probably in a similar way to how they appear in profiles (with little thumbnails).

This is still questionable as it still encourages the same thing as by-post embedding, but the restriction makes one of the main fears, posts-by-pictures, irrelevant. However, it could still cause other issues, such as:

  • People preferring or demanding roleplays to have images on the setting (this would be a huge issue were I to see it)
  • People uploading the same few images for their roleplays (as they share settings) and wasting server space

However, this also offers benefits, such as:

  • Making it easier to share very specific details without a lot of text (e.g a floor plan to a building)
  • Providing native functionality for what people are going to do anyway (linking images), with one, unified place to find everything regarding the roleplay
  • Offering a very distinct advantage over both traditional forums and chat-style play (particularly if the cropper tool was used)

I would still like some other opinions on the matter, however, so I have moved to needs discussion.

I'm so glad to hear your input, Wrecked Avent!

The preference for images on roleplays is a potential, but then some people will only play with characters who have images as well. I personally do not imagine that such a large portion of people would demand rp images that it would become detrimental. It's obviously just speculation, but I would guess that the same portion of players who demand images on profiles will do the same with images on role plays.

The concept of people using the same image repeatedly is more worrisome. I think that trusting users not to keep re-using images would be needed... and if they did reuse images over and over, there may need to be certain rules made. I am not tech savvy enough to comment on this overly much.

I honestly mostly want it to be able to share floor plans or broad maps, expansive and detailed placed, but I am sure other users may use the images for other reasons. I do agree that it would give this site a nice leg up, and could be something that we boosted over other styles of sites though.

I can't wait to hear what others think!

There are times I'd see myself reusing images, like how we have a few RPs going in the Kill la Kill canon. Maybe the server could do something to figure out if the image I'm uploading is already in there, and if so just reuse the same image. Dropbox does the same thing to cut down on duplication.

Perhaps in could be URL-image embed? I know some sites do that, where if you link to an image, it pulls the image and displays it. I'm unsure if that uses server space though, but it's a possible way to go about it.

No real disagreement, so I'm unblocking. We can probably tackle any issues with this as they come up.

This would make profiles look a lot snazzier and cooler. It'll come around eventually, based on endorsements.
