Story Role (awaiting endorsement)
Possible description: The role a character is designed to fill in a scene or story-line.
I didn't end up proposing this as an automatic anything because not only was I unsure if anyone else would care to use it, but there was some concern in various places that this list might end up far too large and ultimately not useful because of it. But I also don't think, personally, it would be something that useful to even set searchable preferences on; it's likely that people would want any possible role filled at different times, in different scenarios and marking everything as 'yes I will play with this' in a potentially too-long list wouldn't help anyone. But I would like to be able to search for "antagonists" or at least characters that are designed with such a role in mind, which isn't possible currently. I'd have to guess at which traits a stereotypical antagonist might have, and search that way or dig through recent characters for someone I haven't seen/asked yet.
Right now, I have a few in mind that would fit under this heading: Protagonist, antagonist, mentor, tempter, sidekick/minion, foil.

How do we handle characters who can be played in multiple story roles?
Not a huge fan of this one, personally. Even if we do manage to get the lists down to something manageable, which would be really difficult, I still don't know if it'd be useful. A character that's set up to be a general antagonist
to whoever they're playing with will likely have to be just plain evil
, because you can't really set up the whole 'well meaning/understandable antagonist' thing without a specific world or character to play off of (and trying to set up someone that's specifically an antagonist for a non-canon world is something I don't think I've ever seen done). As for the other roles, most that you've mentioned (mentor
and tempter
especially) are things that I've never seen a character specifically designed for, at least in terms of an actual story role. Even most teachers/succubi/etc seem to position themselves as protagonists rather than just trying to fill a secondary role.
Seems we got a split opinion here of moderate-to-strong disagreement but also a fair amount of endorsement.
Honestly, I thought that Loki was looking for it to be something that was applied to individual characters, I don't have as strong an opposition to it if it's something that's applied to RPs. That said, I think that this would be a lot more useful if you were able to add some degree of context to it and have multiple parts that you'd like filled for a roleplay. Given how roleplays are done, the vast majority would probably be protagonist looking for protagonist (assuming that you didn't wind up going for more 'inspiration' style titles like domme/slave/etc), so just 'I want another protagonist' seems like it wouldn't add all that much. Adding the ability to specify exactly what you're looking for would make it a lot easier to tell whether the RP would be something for you. Plus, being able to list multiple roles that you want filled would make setting up a multi-person RP a lot easier, something that most sites have a lot of problems with.
Wait never mind it wasn't an auto suggestion to begin with, I am a dum dum
Yeah, the OP wanted endorsements to figure out if this was something that people wanted, and how we would reconcile the potentially large lists of categories (unless we just stuck to something boring and plain like protagonist
/antagonist
). Not only auto suggestions end up in the needs endorsement
status.
Got something to say?
