Feedback ยท Adding interests to profile is very tedious (accepted)

I don't like Litphoria's way, because I select Mandatory, Core, Yes, Will_Try, or No first. I have to go through the entire list of interests FIVE times, once for each category, which is exhausting... Or I can take a mental note of the interest, scroll way down, select the desired list, scroll back up and find that same interest again, then click it. I find that even more exhausting.

I like F-list's way, because I can go through their entire list of kinks once. For each kink, I select Favorite, Yes, Maybe, or No. Makes sense, even if the interface is messy looking.

The first idea that comes to mind, is to make it so that when you click an interest, a little popup window appears under your mouse cursor. Add interest to: Mandatory, Core, Yes, Will_Try, or No. A little X button to cancel out. That way, it does it the good way, but is cleaner looking.

Popup windows don't fit the rest of the site, but that's just an implementation detail and is easily changed. If such a thing were added, it'd likely just replace the entire list with four more buttons to choose which interest to add it to.

... but then we basically have what it was before, which was very tedious. It's somewhere between 2 and 5 times as many clicking to do it like that.

Hm, trying to think of other ideas. Maybe if somehow, it worked like it does now, but the buttons for Mandatory, Core, Yes, Will_Try and No were guaranteed to be on the screen. That way you'd get the best of both worlds! Though I dunno where they would go...

F-List's interface is messy though, that's the thing. When I'm editing it's impossible to see clearly what's in one list or another. The page was also unwieldy and enormous because of how it had to be laid out to allow for this.

Here it is more effort if you are going interest by interest and adding each one to a different list. However it is very rapid if you go list by list and dump in all or most of your interests for a particular list at once.

Well, what F-list does is they have a huge honking list of all possible options all expanded and you get controls to choose which list it belongs to on every item. This is obviously not the most ideal, as it's 1) ugly, and 2) quite intimidating (we have similar issues with the sheer size of the list in things like profile creation already). However, that approach has the least amount of clicking. Just the most amount of needless scrolling.

So we have to make a choice somehow. I don't really think there's a way to get around the fact that our list is either going to be massive or it's going to involve a lot of clicking.

We could have keyboard modifiers to make going interest by interest faster. Turn them on, then... Click is yes, control+click is will try, shift+click is core, shift+control+click is no. Mandatory is rare, pick the list itself.

Also, interest categorization I'm hoping will help make this feel more streamlined, as we'll be able to add entire categories of interest to a list at a time (with probably a similar interface to what we have now) to avoid needing to add every. little. detail to every. little. list.

That might help a lot! Changing an interest from one list to another is super nice and easy. So it'd be easy to tweak after adding categories to lists.

I still prefer F-list's way, but that's just me. Though having all the buttons disappear and replaced by category buttons would be so awkward and disorienting, that I wouldn't like that either, yeah!

It wasn't exactly how it worked before. What it did earlier is when you select an interest the list would disappear then you would select a list header, similar to how it works when you switch what list an interest belongs to now. This was still kind of disorientating and awkward, but it (or having the options appear in place of the list) is basically the only way that comes to mind to avoid just not having a huge list like f-list does.

I think we would have to wait until interest categorization comes to see how it impacts the "feel" of adding interests.

Making the creation and editing of profiles easier is always going to be a goal. Some things will be done to improve that process, though it's not clear at this time what the precise implementation will be.
