Ideal email alert system (in review)
master of 1 children
After a bit of thought, this is what I'd like for the email alert system.
If a person is connected to a roleplay, if they interact with it at all--scrolling, typing,--in the first 60 seconds, then a notification won't go to the inbox. When something goes into the Inbox and it's not checked within 2 minutes, it sends out an email alert. If the Inbox already has an unchecked notification from that roleplay, no additional email will be sent out.
The idea is, if a person if someone is actively roleplaying, the toasts are alert enough. If they're actively using the site but not connected to a roleplay, an inbox notification will get the job done. And if they go afk while leaving either the roleplay or the site generally open, they'll get an email that can alert them on their mobile or just notice once they come back. And by limiting the emails, there won't ever be spam.

I think toasts are too unreliable to be used as primary notification. If I look away for my monitor for a few seconds I could miss them.
If you click a toast, it should clear out whatever the related inbox item is, instead.
There's three parts to this:
- Send notifications for messages even if you're in the channel, unless you're active in that channel very soon after they're sent.
- Send an email notice after only 2 minutes of that notification sitting around.
- Don't send repeat emails if there's yet more messages.
The last one's been implemented. The other two seem very good, and may be related to a request for more aggressive email alerts (litphoria.com).
Lich, parts 1 and 3 are implemented. Additional notifications to the same item do not generate more e-mails. 2 will have to be something user-configurable, as 2 minutes is going to be way too aggressive for some people.
My interpretation that the real meat of this (#1):
If a person is connected to a roleplay, if they interact with it at all--scrolling, typing,--in the first 60 seconds, then a notification won't go to the inbox.
is in inverting it:
If a person is connected to a roleplay, and they don't interact with it at all in the first 60 seconds, then a notification will go to the inbox.
... and that is what I'm describing in #1. Very soon afterwards, this would turn into an email notification, which would make for a very aggressive notification system indeed.
