Feedback ยท Change the definition of Ageplay (implemented)

It got to my attention that current definition of Ageplay is not clear enough and makes people default to thinking of it in Flist-like way (Being an interest in playing with much younger characters) or as being related to the player himself (as in, saying that you want to play with people who have characters of different age than their own).

The proposed change would replace this definition:

Expresses an interest in character roleplaying age different than his actual age

With this one:

Expresses an interest in a scene during which a character will roleplay (within the roleplay) a different age than their actual age

I would suggest that the redefinition be applied to a new interest called Age-Roleplay, since that is certainly an accurate term, expressing more acurately the sense of wanting an RP within an RP, which is unique. Don't bother linking to Wikipedia on Ageplay. For live, face-to-face RP, I won't dispute the definition, but when you are on an RP site, it is not the default assumption that you want RP within RP, which is probably the heart of its current misuse on Litphoria.

Then for Ageplay, use the definition: Expresses an interest in a character who's age is significantly different from their own.

I suggest this due to the way Ageplay is predominantly utilized by current characters (not intending to look for RP within RP.) My context note is a case in point:

Ageplay : In the context of how most use the term Ageplay, this is a 'Yes' for me, but only for non-pedophilia ageplay, meaning between a mid-teen to 20's character and a mid-30s to 50s character.

So of course, the standard Lit argument that you can just express that 'interest' in a Trait-Like does not work for me, both because I am willing to RP my character as a range from young adult up to middle-age (which we somehow don't have as an age option yet), and I will RP with the same range, AND have an interest in there being an age difference.

And another option is that an Interest called Age Difference is added that covers mine and other's interest, using the definition I suggest above for Ageplay.

Ageplay has a very exact definition and is quite popular within BDSM circles, having nothing to do with pedophilia or physical age differences. At some point, somewhere, people started using this as a cover word for pedophilia on roleplaying sites, but it's not like it changes the actual definition. It'd be like if the same sites decided that BDSM really meant scat play and everyone used to that definition demanded ours meant scat play because of their truthiness.

On the other hand, I recognize people have basically learned this word as a code word and there's not much we could do to impact people picking it out of habit without reading the current description (as a lot do). There really isn't anyway to get around this other than to rename it to something else.

I like Jason's suggestion to rename it to age roleplay. Then people might notice it's not the same thing as on another site.

LOL Turgidly-ridiculous-example, much? The point is that the current definition can be misread so that those who do like to RP with 'childs,' as your search puts it, decide to choose Ageplay as an interest. No way to search on those that 'dislike childs', but I run across many who like to RP age difference but have Age of Child as a Dislike and often Teen as well. It's also confusing on an RP site if you don't explicitly indicate that something is referring to RP that occurs within the RP implied by the fact that you are on an RP site. (RPing RP). I'll take your word that Ageplay is now a widely used code word for pedophilia on other sites. Then maybe it should not have been used on Lit? You can't blame people for not reading a slow pop-up when that word is in wide use on other RP sites. You could even remove it entirely, using the alternatives of Age-Roleplay, and Age Difference instead.

I'd be happy to suggest the Age Difference one, if so.

The Mood is Write

I like Captain Jack Harkness's suggestion for the reword, myself. It's very clear what it means, while still keeping to the definition this site uses.

For play about age differences, just select the trait age you want, and then set the preference to an age section different than that. That covers non-pedophilia age difference, pedophilia age difference, and anything else I can think of that's covered by f-list's accepted definition of the word.

Reworking the definition is a fine option, but I also know that most all profiles on here have used it as the online-RP version of Ageplay, so I'm thinking we need to create something named something like Age Difference. Technically, Age Role-play is much more accurate for online RP sites, whatever the accepted IRL definition is, so I suggested that, but either way, I've encountered far, far more people who like non-underage roleplay with characters that are significantly different ages that I have otherwise (either underage OR RP-a-different-age).

To make it very clear, since it is being mis-used, I'd suggest a definition of: "Expresses an interest in a character pretending to be a different age than the character actually is."
('pretending to be a...' could optionally be 'role-playing a...')

Personally, I think we need an Age Difference interest, both because I see it as more widely used that the other age-interests, but also because simply setting characteristics isn't enough, and also, having a new, unique Interest will maybe make people currently using Ageplay look more closely at the definitions and correct their usage.

...and another reason to use Age Role-play is to also reset the use of Ageplay by deleting it.

PS : In my last post, I know when to use than and that, but... typos. :/

If someone wants to make a suggestion to change ageplay to age roleplay or whatever else, or the OP wants to edit this to that, they're certainly free to.

I don't know how made this suggestion, but I can add an Age-Difference suggestion. I just noticed another person who has Ageplay in their No, and I'm not sure she'd care about putting Age-Roleplay in her No. It's possible, but I get the feeling she read it like I did, which was in the wrong sense.
