Ok, this will probably stirr some discussion, so I will comment on two main gripes that can be had:
You can search for RPs that have characters with
Supernatural Nature
ofMagical
No, I can't because not every roleplay played with a character like that will actually involve magic. This ends up being inaccurate.
It should be separated into more small interests, this is not action-like enough.
Gladly, but here we hit a problem - magic as a concept is very diverse. I thought about Magic Combat
which would work. Then, technically you could do Spellcasting
(which is just a bit of re-phrasing of this one) doesn't fit all the types of magic and ways magic can be present in the RP.
Cropping into types of magic actions would kill the Interest list, providing everything possible.
I do realize this is very much a Theme
rather than Interest
, but it does provide value in a basic state like proposed. At least in my opinion.
Sounds good to me. Some people like magic being present, supernatural aside, some people hate it. The guy who suggested magic as a trait can go put it in his nos, I can put it in my yes.

Definitely doesn't fit all the types of magic. Magical Girl roleplays can have a lot of magic happening but no spells being cast.
Because it is a bit ridiculous to list them all. Let me take a deep breath and...
Divination, summoning, enchanting, planar travel (this could actually be an interest either way), rune-kennering, magic artifacts, spellcasting, voodoo magic. Off the top of my head, I am sure many-many more would be there as it would go on. The entirety of magic stuff could just cover a lot. And some of them still don't communicate it is, in fact, Magic.
Like, if you do Planar travel
interest, it can still be done in sci-fi way.

This is kind of complicated. I can see a few distinct needs:
We have a lot of distinct needs here, and it seems like it almost needs to belong under multiple systems, such as both traits and interests, to fully capture everything here.
But, we do have a very real issue of scope. A general magic
I could see being used as a roleplay theme, in that the roleplay itself would revolve around magic use (like say a wizard going on an adventure to discover how to cast a powerful spell), but this particular use case isn't really what I see being expressed as desired out of this.
Well, we could create a 'Magic Use' trait. perhaps with sub-categories to define what kind of magic they use. (Necromancy, Wizardry, Witchcraft, Crystalmancy, Juju, Teleportation, Planar Travel, Enchanting, Psionics, etc) but in general, showing that you -are- a magic user might also state that you are intending to include magic into the scene.
The trait was discussed and kind of shot down because of the amount of categories.
Also, it might say that you intend to, but look at it from the perspective of advanced searching for Ideas or RPs to read - you can filter by having characters that have Supernatural Nature of Magical, but that will give you a lot of false positives. Which makes that method of searching kind of 'Meh'.
That's really too bad considering the amount of categories under other things. Species has 34! categories and I'm not sure how "magic" could have more than that. Or even more than the 28! that the whole body mod's group has...
Would be a lot more considering sheer amount of fantasy magic systems that categorize everything it all the possible ways and with every possible main idea.
Also, there is a more important thing that I totally forgot about: traits are made for one choice. It works for Species because hybrid
is still somewhat useful (people might not like them), but a tremendous amount of people who would pick some kind of magic wouldn't be constrained to one. And what use would be there of a trait for which 50% or more users choose Many
or however it would be called?
Split them up into 4-5 different groupings like body mods then. People didn't want to pick between "pierced" and "tattooed" and "cybernetics" and "multiple" so we got one for each to say exactly how pierced, tattooed, and cybernetically engineered you might be. I don't know or care much about magic, I'm more about tech-stuff, but I figure people who like magic can whittle it down to ~5 related groups.
Not really, no. It is as free-form as it can be. Attempting to convey magic within the traits would be like trying to make set of traits that would hold your character's backstory - interesting thought experiment, but utterly undoable. Body mods work because there are some obvious things (like a type of a mod) that you can pull from these. With magic? Not really. Especially in a way that wouldn't make you lose the (already doubtful) usefulness in searching.
Got something to say?
