This happens to me as well on Chrome Android. When you're in another app or a different browser tab, your chat tab goes to sleep and doesn't update properly. When you return, chat might not be able to reconnect properly. (Also, any new message in the backlog will make a sudden rush of new messages appear in the backlog that you missed in the meantime.)

This is actually a long-standing issue with IEs, but I've only hardly heard of it being a problem on other mobile devices.
It happens infrequently for me when returning to a tab or when getting it to reconnect.
