related to Ability to edit comments

Because sometimes I'm tired and I hit "Submit My Post" before really proofreading and then I just look dumb.

Almost all of my feedback comments come in pairs. I'd like some viable way to edit stuff that won't be disruptive to the flow of conversation.

There actually isn't any technical reason why you couldn't do this, it's just a philosophical one. When you make a post, everyone else is alerted to it, which means some people will read your post pretty much immediately as you send it.

Editing tends to encourage weirder behaviors on some other sites, such as people totally changing their point, or deleting their text entirely when they feel the conversation doesn't go that way. It's not really in the site's best interest to allow that kind of behavior, I feel.

Usually sites work with tricks to prevent this, like you can only change the post for 10 minutes or as long as no one answered to it. From my experience this happens rarely that someone changes an old post, only thing I can remember is, that someone deleted them all out of anger.

There's other sites that treat the post as public property over which the author has stewardship, not total ownership and dictatorship. If they edit it in a way that has a bad impact, moderators (in this case community managers?) can roll it back and/or lock it.

Amelia, that could work.

Desdemona, a time window might also work, and would most directly address the two large concerns of someone simply snipping out their post when they "lost" an argument or otherwise editing it to be misleading.

OK then. I'm okay with this with the following provisos:

  • No editing after a short period (5-15 minutes)
  • Original post is still accessible to be seen,

Putting 30 endorsement points into this to help get it implemented, as it hasn't as of yet been put into the live (or testing) sites since being confirmed back in November of 2015. This tool would be handy to people who use Feedback and are privy to mistakes or typos, and at the same time not expensive to put in. All that said, it's not an important thing to put in on the "to-do" list, but I would personally appreciate seeing it on it as I'm sure it isn't too difficult to do, esp. with the:

  • No editing after a short period.
  • OP is visible after edit.

being still there!
