Feedback ยท Rename categories to 'trait options' (accepted)

master of 1 children

There's a thing called categories. They're the things you pick for traits: male, female, tall, etc. People are constantly confused about them and suggest traits when they mean to suggest these things. That's understandable, they sound like they mean the groups we put traits in like body, personality, meta, etc.

Let's rename them to trait options instead. It's clearer and we'll no longer be confused.

(It's confusing trying to pick a name for these things because from one way of looking at it, "sex" and "intelligence" and "charisma" are definitely traits one has. But from another perspective, they're not: "male" and "female", or "smart" or "dumb" or "genius", or "awkward" or "charming" are the traits instead, and the other three must be something else. So really both kinds of things make sense being called traits. Trait options seems like the best option though.)

Rename trait categories to trait descriptors (or something else?)

I would not be comfortable making this change without some more opinions on the matter, since this term has been in use for a while now.

Griz

Trait options is waaaaay more clear. Heavily support changing this.

I think the discussion was started because I did it wrong. I wanted to suggest a new trait-category and so I clicked on "New Trait", I didn't read the description of "New Category" since "New Trait" seemed the obvious choice. I wasn't aware, that "Category" is an official term like "Trait" or "Interest". Exchanging "New Category" by "New Option" woukd probably not solve the problem, while "Trait-category" also would work.

Option has the advantage that it cannot be mistaken so easily for the trait-groups or traits.

It's not just you, Desdemona. As far as I can tell, dozens of people have done it wrong — I've lost count of the number of times I've written something to the effect of "you need to suggest this as a category", and I assume it's not the same person making the same mistake every time.

Also, I considered but decided against "trait category" - that sounds exactly prone to the very same error - a category you put traits into. "Trait option" at least sounds unambiguously like "an option you pick for traits".

I know, but I am more talkative than the others who did it wrong. :) Yes, I also think trait-option is the better choice, since trait-category just by the name gives no hint what it means.

Could we make this change? I don't think more opinions are going to be coming unless you scope for them somewhere, WA, and I don't remember the last time I saw a Category suggestion that wasn't a Trait suggestion to start with. There is nothing to lose at this point.
