Feedback ยท Remain connected to chat rooms while browsing the site (accepted)

I'd like to remain connected to chat rooms I join while browsing any part of the site, so that I only need one tab to be fully active here. I would also like something like a small feed to be present showing me if something's going on in the rooms I'm connected to.

This is because I don't like having lots of tabs open, but to be present in multiple rooms and also browse the site, I need lots of tabs. I'm not willing to do that, so usually that just means I'm only in one, maybe two rooms. I can't appear available in all the rooms I'm willing to talk, and signal I'm there and available to talk to, and if a room I like other than Main or Adult Main becomes active I usually don't notice until hours after whoever it is has totally up and left, and usually there was only one person because everyone else doesn't notice either. That's a lot of lost opportunity for me.

I'd like to stay connected so that I can browse freely, always see what's up, and join in when anyone's talking. (I don't think every room in my inbox should perpetually show up there - I should be able to choose to join and leave rooms regardless of whether I've spoken there, so I can choose what to watch and what to appear present in. There's a Leave button, but since it deletes all my messages in the room as well, that won't do the job - if someone's busy intensely roleplaying or I don't feel like watching or participating in that room right now, I should just be able to remove it from my feed and not show up as present there.)

It occurs to me I have no idea how this should work with character switching...

Logistics aside, it occurred to me this'll be really handy for site activity in general.

It's really really common there's absolutely nobody present in adult main, because nobody speaks there most often, but nobody speaks there, because nobody's present! And when someone new does speak, nobody notices until like hours later because they weren't there, and often nobody at all replies, because nobody's there! It's not worth keeping a tab open for, it's just a dead tab doing nothing most days.

If we can come onto the site and connect to a bunch of rooms we're interested in following, on characters we're interested in following those rooms on, then whammo, there will be people apparently present in those rooms when I visit them. And when I talk in them, someone will notice and respond. It's good!

Plus it'd be way easier for keeping track of those other rooms on my phone. Background tabs go to sleep, so I can only realistically pay attention to one room at a time, and I will disconnect from all of the others. This could give me like a sidebar or something I can open up to take a peek if there's recent activity in other rooms I'm connected to, and then I won't have to waste time browsing to them or checking my inbox and leaving my current room to do so and stuff.

Interface-wise, one way to handle it could be this: I join a room as a character, and then have a pin-like button which means "keep this character connected here while I'm on the site connected to any room." I'd pin Samus to Main Channel, Satsuki to Honnouji Academy (if it was still around), etc.

My feed from other rooms would show up with a tiny picture of my character (like half the height and width of normal) with the room name beside it and the latest message there and who posted it.

When I switch character in Main Channel from Samus to some other character, I'm not sure what should happen exactly. (Should Samus cease to be connected to it, like normal, until next time I leave the site and come back and it resets to my pinned characters? Does the pinned character change, meaning I really just pin myself to different rooms and can change my pinned character there fluidly?)
