It occurs to me a great deal of time each rp setup phase is scheduling, at least it had been for me. Trying to find out when each is online if faster 'in-seat' interaction is desired, converting for time differences, it's all a bit of a hassle. I think being able to enter common times available for rp, perhaps with levels of available based upon day of the week would be helpful.

I feel like the description on a character would be a viable place to freely enter this information, although I won't spit at the idea of being able to readily design the profile to reflect availability. Availability, I will go on to say, is a huge, huge, huge part of planning for an RP; it's not uncommon to find that it is an issue, but less on forums and more on instant messengers.

The hassle of trying to line up schedules is one of the reasons you don't need to at all here, you can just post freely when you have the time or when they have the time.

Astarte

True, but I've yet to start or join an RP where the question of "when are you most active" didn't come up. I love that this website seamlessly integrates forum post and an active back and forth chat like system. It's easily the largest selling point for me. I still think there would be some tangible benefit in having an availibilty descriptor on a profile, optional to fill out, that would convert everything to a local time.

That's only if you want to do an asynchronous roleplay. Most of mine are synchronous: both of us devote a few hours to each others' time. There's some things I'd only do synchronously, such as sexual scenes that have build-up. (I can't just come in fresh on Tuesday evening, sit down, and get myself back in the mood to continue in the very middle of a scene like this, sometimes.)

I have a partner who I'm happily doing an async roleplay with, and we each do 1-2 posts most days. But, there's certain parts of that roleplay I'd only want to do synchronously too - mainly the sex scenes.

Samus

(Actually I'd do some of those async too, now that I've put my toes in the water of async play, but I don't think I could do everything async - and I've actually had to put my toes in the water first. I haven't done this much before this site.)

How fine-grained are we imagining this would be?

Astarte

I was thinking hours, meant as a window of activity not a dedicated commitment. If RP needs to be planned down to the half hour this at least starts the discussion.

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

I don't imagine people have the same availability every day of the week, though.

Samus

If we could go all out, then I'd want to mark each hour per day as "somewhat available", " very available ", and "not available". I'd set my sleep hours to the last and work hours to the first.

Astarte

I would hope for day of the week and per hour. That in my opinion gives a good general indicator of availability with the understanding schedules are fluid things.

Astarte

Not sure how much call there might be for it, but I'd like to be able to search for potential partners based upon when they were available too.
