Feedback · Multiselect traits (needs discussion)

I made this to discuss a central aspect of a few other suggestion like this or this. Multiselect traits.

A multiselect trait is if you can select not just one category but a few. Instead of haircolor "blonde" you could choose "red" and "blonde". This offers more flexibility for creating a profile, instead of two traits like hair-length and hair-color a single trait named "hair" is enough. The categories (Black, Blond, Blue...) and (Bald, Floor Length, Knee-Length...) are put together. It shows up on the profile like this:

Hair: Knee-Length, blonde

Genitals: Penis, Large, knotted, double

Species: Feline, kemonomimi

All information about the character's species/hair/penis with one look and you only have to select as many categories as you really want. New combinations are possible.

Supernatural powers: Demonic, magical, shapeshifter.

Also multiple-choices.

Setting: Historical, Science fiction

Instead of Post length: "varies", which doesn't say much:

Post length: Page, Multi paragraph, paragraph.

When you say you made these to discuss that, it sounds like you're not making a proposal exactly so much as want us to discuss something about it. If so you might want to propose a talking point like what are our thoughts on these, would they be valuable and if so where, etc.

The reason why the site was not originally designed with multi-select is that it, inherently, rewards and attracts "fuzzy" profiles with vague or generalized information, such as profiles that will play as any species or any gender.

Also, this is a fairly unusual take on multi-select, usually it is just multi-selecting already present traits. This appears to desire to want to squash several together into one, like in this example:

Genitals: Penis, Large, knotted, double

which, to me, sounds more like you want some kind of tagging system.

.

I have to say though, at least in the examples picked here, the 'tag' type system looks like it works pretty well! Also you can discourage 'fuzzy' profiles by emphasising that the multiple selections are all true. I.e. provide an example "for example if your character has red and blonde hair, select Red and Blonde".

Not that I see what's wrong with fuzzy profiles anyway.

I'd like multi-select, but not with multiple traits in one line. I'd like to be able to select that she has, say, multiple supernatural natures, or that she's immortal but looks like a young adult. Doing this would offer more precision.

There absolutely needs to be the ability to add multiple choices to certain subjects, such as the supernatural example given, to narrow down specifics (since you do not have demon or angel as a species) as well as better describe the character. Species is another category that needs multi-selection, to better describe hybrids. Unless you plan on agreeing to the hybrid tag. This list is not exhaustive, just the things that come to mind.

You might want to comment on this thing, άκυρος, since it's concerning those traits: help what can we do with the tangle of traits that say what kind of thing you are (litphoria.com)

I'm gonna point out something explicit that WA was getting at, this suggestion seems to be getting at two things:

  • merging (at least visually) some of the traits -- hair (appears to be length + color) and genitals (the trait itself, + size + type + multiple)
  • being able to pick more than one category for a trait -- species, supernatural powers, setting, post length

... I might open a feedback item about that first one on its own.

Yes I'm aware that this post covers more than one topic, but it's the multiple options I'd like to have specifically because it is possible to be more than one thing in a single being.

Desdemona Fireheart

@Samus: True. Multiselect and "Merging traits for multiselect" are two things but they are part of one suggestion. Both make no sense without the other. Multiselect without merging is another suggestion.

@άκυρος: If it is a problem that "you do not have demon or angel as a species" then I think the best is to add demon or angel as species. The idea to change "supernatural powers" into "supernatural nature" to have "demonic" for demons without magical power was not good in my eyes. That could be solved by a new trait: "Supernatural species" where gods, demons and the like are listed. This is not a single- vs multiselect problem.

The example was "Supernatural powers: Demonic, magical, shapeshifter." I can choose the nature "demonic/magic" and the kind "shapeshifting/telepathie" of my powers. Having divine power and being a god is not the same. If I want both as categories of the same multiselect trait then I need "demonic"(the power) and "demon"(the nature). If I use vague categories - works for this and also that - it's difficult to interpret for the one reading the profile.

How would I be able to tell the red-blond characters apart from the characters that can be redheads or blond? I think this is basically the same question that Desdemona is asking as well, and it's important. I do not want to ever filter through characters that can be redheaded or blond if what I am looking for are only red-blonds.
