As of a few days ago I've noticed that after a message arrives, the chat interface freezes up for me for maybe a half second. I've noticed this in large channels, on my phone (Android Chrome) and on my desktop (Windows 10 Chrome). The timing seems consistent and I notice it because I'm typing at the time.

I've noticed this as well. I've seen two other users run into chat "freezes" as well. I chakled it up to there being much more traffic in chats in the past weeks.

Several tweaks have been made to make this more efficient, it should be much less noticeable now
