I can't remember the name of the actual mode, but just now phone-browsing, I found that even scrolling to the bottom of all messages, the "new messages at the bottom" indicator stuck around when using the mode which scrolls the whole page instead of just the chatbox (i.e. forum style).
The indicator could still be manually closed by pressing the X.

Page scrolling mode? Backlog scrolling mode has the scroll bar inside the chat itself. Page scrolling just expands the chat log to its full height and lets you scroll the page instead.
How'd you happen across this? Was that "new messages" indicator still actively showing up on new messages in page scrolling mode?
I just tried to test this by letting that bar show up in backlog scrolling mode then switching over to page scrolling without dismissing it, but it disappeared on its own.
Yeah I was just randomly browsing on my phone this morning and after switching over to the other mode, the message stopped going away when new posts showed up. Now that I'm on computer, I can tell you yeah, "Page Scrolling" mode is what I was referring to. My Lit has been weird recently though, not remembering settings in RPs either.
