Disable headings on single line messages (implemented)
Almost every time I see someone use the heading syntax in chat, they were just saying a hashtag for a joke (e.g. #firstworldproblems, or #gonewrong).
Then it becomes a heading, and people are usually surprised or disconcerted or frustrated.
Could we disable the heading syntax for single line messages?

Disagree. Markup messups are a valuable teaching experience for actually learning it.
That and I'm philosophically against systems which don't behave predictably. Do we change the markdown guide with a bunch of (unless the message is on one line) type stuff?
Yes. ^
If there's a set of markdown which predictably doesn't work unless you have more than one line, that's good.
Mostly I just see things like list markup and headings being a regular pain in the butt for people to deal with, even those who've quite thoroughly learned the syntax. I can't start a message by stating a number then a full stop, or else it turns into a list with a "1" at the start.
That yes is "yes we'd change the markdown guide to say which things don't work if the message is on one line".
I would love this. The number of people who just want to use # for a joke and end up with massive text is pretty high.
This is on the testing server, but not as this was requested. Instead of a single line, which is vague and hard to determine, it is based off of if your post contains line breaks (i.e enter/shift+enter). With none of those, your post is considered "inline" and cannot generate things like lists, quotes, or headings.
