Feedback ยท Delete and replace categories under Character Language. (in review)

related to Delete Character Language

I think our problem with Character Language stems from ineffective use of what could be a really interesting trait.

I propose deleting "common", "foreign", and "non-verbal", and replacing them with the following, which I'll post as their own feedbacks once I hear more opinions on this. I really like the trait, but it's clearly not getting things done how others would like.

Replacements include:

  • Spoken
  • Written-Only
  • Point-and-Grunt
  • Sign language
  • Telepathic
  • Harmonic
  • Non-Communicating
  • Conlang
  • No Local Communication
  • Limited Local Communication
  • Heavily Accented Communication

These categories with offer more searching capability, and if someone does or doesn't want to play with someone who uses one of these communication methods, they can use this trait and its categories to clearly indicate this.

Agreed, language is one of the many things that make no sense in the current profile set up

The Mood is Write

Added two new possible categories:

  • No Local Communication
  • Limited Local Communication

I think this is a great replacement~

I have linked this with the other proposed way to handle this trait. We'll take comments and endorsements on both proposals to consider what approach is best to take.

The Mood is Write

Aye aye, WA! Thanks!

This sounds like a viable replacement to the existing character language trait.

I'm concerned about these options existing in a mutually exclusive setup. (I expressed as much in chat and might as well say so here as well; Mood replied with a suggestion I'll also say.)

If my character speaks, writes, and knows sign language, what do I pick? Professor Xavier speaks, writes, is telepathic, and probably knows several of the other things Because Plot, which do I pick? Unlike with the post perspective or post tense, I can't indicate my primary preference then use the Like preference to indicate what else I'm willing to do.

Mood suggested indicating your primary communication method by choosing just one, then expressing secondary methods in the trait context. I guess that works passably. To bring up an old idea, there'd also be not much issue here if this trait was given multiselect one day.

I think three of the options listed here are not very good ones: "no local communication" and "limited local communication" I don't understand, and it sounds like it's trying to replicate the "foreign" option, which was totally broken because whether you have local communication depends on where you are and who you're speaking to. I also don't think "heavily accented communication" works - just pick your actual communication method (spoken, telepathic, something else) and say whether you have a heavy accent.

Ok, that's my 2c. I'm not very attached to having a language trait but I'm fine with whatever works and is important.

another possible trait:

  • Selective Communication

for those selective mutes, of course.
