Feedback ยท Remove default example text from fields. (needs discussion)

When creating a profile or a roleplay or other things, there is example text, such as "the super awesome roleplay of magic" and "in a galaxy far, far away".

For a new user, the humor can be hit or miss, or they can get confused, with text already entered there and not knowing immediately that they need to replace it with something else.

For veteran users, the humor fades and it grows tacky.

The cons outweigh the pros, so I feel it should be scrapped.

Cons:

-Some new users are confused about how to fill out fields. -Some new users don't find the bit of levity funny, think it's lame. -Some Experienced users grow tired of seeing the same thing over and over.

Neutral -Some users just don't notice it.

Pros -Some users find it funny -Some users are less confused

That last point is a bit moot though, because all of the fields have instructions underneath them of what should go in them.

I'm a veteran user. I don't find it tacky. I just overlook it and type in my thing. I suggest we speak for ourselves here rather than try to represent some arbitrary group of users.

Placeholder text is becoming fairly common so I don't know if there's much reason to be concerned about confusion. If you don't fill out a mandatory field you'll find that out pretty quickly.

Probably there are some placeholder texts that are unnecessary and can be simplified or dropped altogether. "Super awesome roleplay of magic" might be a bit over the top and we don't necessarily need a roleplay title suggestion.

I don't want to see the placeholder texts wiped out as a whole; they're useful, especially in fields like this one I'm typing in right now which don't have a label (and are fine not having one). The placeholder text acts as a prompt for what it's for. That's good use of them.

I meant to follow that comment up earlier once I had more time to reflect, but got pulled away...

I could see some confusion coming from the fact those placeholders have a text color very close to our regular filled-in text color, such that it could be easily mistaken for the content already being filled in but mysteriously disappearing when you click on it.

I also won't object if it happens to go away, I just don't think about it much and I'm in the crowd you're talking about as well.

Veteran user and I do find it tacky. Korra don't do what you're telling them not to do with the "arbitrary group of users" thing.

Quenthell

I'd like to see it gone, mostly just because it's silly.

Quite frankly this seems a bit inane. It's difficult to assume if new users are confused by this unless you've got a significant amount of new users reporting this is confusing.

Personally, I agree with Korra, it isn't tacky and even if it does come off as 'silly' it has some lighthearted charm that makes the website feel a bit more welcoming to me.

Placeholder text is also very useful, and I'd like to think the websites interface does have a bit of a learning curve that is relatively nonexistent after you ask a few questions or after you play with it a bit.

Quite frankly, if people are turned off by a website because it incorporates a bit of humor into an activity that's usually if not always meant for recreation and enjoyment.. Well something tells me they won't exactly be the sort of people that are easy to get along with.

Quenthell

I guess some people find it endearing, I just find it childish.
