It's a rather simple idea, personally I've found it a bit difficult to tell when I've received a new message if I have said message tab closed.
Maybe we could have something more popping added to the inbox button by the header, perhaps a number count of just how many new notifications you have? Not unlike the number notification that you receive when there's messages in a chat tab you're in.

Chats and roleplays not communicating that you have new messages in your inbox very well has been an issue since there have been notifications. Solutions to improve upon this have been asked for since there have been notifications, and it's on the Big List of Things to Do. This is a duplicate request, so it'll be closed, but rest assured that a solution for this is in the works.
