Reconfigure Body Height (relative) and Body Height (absolute) (needs discussion)
Though it was probably me who brought up the thing with relative and absolute body height, these were terms for the discussion. If someone sees these traits without the background information they will probably think wtf?
My suggestion for the trait-names is Body Height
and Size
to clarify the difference between the traits. Also the trait-options for the size (absolute height) should be more figuratively:
- Pixie size: (The character is tiny, smaller than 2 feet tall)
- Dwarf size: (The character is smaller than a human, 2-5 feet tall)
- Human size: (The char has human size, 5-7 feet tall)
- Ogre size: (The char is larger than a human, 7-12 feet tall)
- Giant size: (The char has an enormous size, over 12 feet tall)
The absolute height is from the view of a scientist: how big is the species, like a mouse or an elephant?
The Body height
(relative height) is from the view of a member of the same species: Is he a small guy? The relative height should stay inside the size: a "very short" human is 5 feet tall, a "very tall" human 7 feet tall.
Trait options for body height
could be:
- Very short
- Short
- Average
- Tall
- Very Tall
But not "Miniature" and "Giant" since this is already covered by the Size
.

Renaming Body Height (relative) and Body Height (absolute) to Body Height and Size respectively doesn't sound bad to me. Could go further and go with Height and Size. I think that it could be best to rename them to Relative Height and Size.
As for the trait options going with fantasy races, I'm a little bit less sure. I think I'd rather have that in the descriptions, like make the Description for Small into "A character that is between 2' and 3'11 feet tall, such as a medium-sized dog or a halfling."
The question is, if it is a relevant information for me, if a character is a tall dwarf or a short dwarf. Important for me is the other characters body height compared to mine and not relative to his own species. If the 10 feet tall ogre is smaller or bigger than other ogres is important for him, but not for me. Only if I play an ogre myself, this is important for me. We had the example of a 6 feet tall amazon which is small compared to the other amazons of her tribe. The question is if the species of the amazon would be "human" or "amazon".
With this system, we can have a Halfling with a Body Height (Relative) of Tall who is head and shoulders taller than most other halflings, while still being Short with regards to their Body Height (Absolute).
This is right. But the species of a halfling is demihuman. Ogre and goblin have the same species: Goblinoid. What is meant here is more the society or the race.
The only species where this works well is human. Since we have a precise idea how tall a human usually is and the chance to play with another human sized character is quite good. If I play a small woman (human size) this is a relevant information for many other players. I would prefer a scale which is finer around the human size:
- Tiny: (The character is tiny, smaller than 2 feet tall)
- Very short: (The character is smaller than a human usually is, 2-5 feet tall)
- Short: (The char is small for a human, down to 5 foot tall)
- Average: (The char has average human size, around 6 foot tall)
- Tall: (The char is tall for a human, up to 7 foot tall)
- Very tall: (The char is larger than a human usually is, 7-12 feet tall)
- Giant: (The char has an enormous size, over 12 feet tall)
Something like this.
