Adding search parameters can be confusing and unintuitive because of the large amount of tags that can be slightly overwhelming. It makes searching very inefficient.
The search screen could also be spread out a bit. Having everything in a single column just makes the screen very long.

Generally, suggestions for things have two parts: Identifying a problem and proposing a solution. In this case, there definitely is a problem: the search needs some work. The best solution is usually less clear, but adding some more subcategories and spreading it out could have some real value for users.
That said, a better solution for the longterm could be going with an entirely new, more powerful search system rather than patching and tweaking the current one.
I don't think the current system is inherently broken. A lot of web sites use a very similar search system. I think a few sub-categories and maybe some drop-down selects could tidy it up real quickly.
This could be handled with dropdowns instead of multiple buttons, grouped by mutually exclusive options
