Feedback ยท Change Employment to Occupation (needs discussion)

automatic trait suggestion : 0 out of 50

Looking at the trait for "employment", it doesn't really seem appropriate for the selections under it. "Occupation" is similar, but covers more areas like if the character is a student or commits illegal activities and is thus more appropriate.

This makes sense to me and I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Korra

I agree, employment implies an employer and is a more modern term. The Avatar isn't employed, but she has an occupation.

Desdemona Fireheart

On the other hand "government" is not an occupation, it's an employer. Also "military". The occpuation would be "soldier" or "warrior".

Korra

I could say the mayor has an occupation in government, and that government is literally what they do, though.

Desdemona Fireheart

Yes. But a secretary, a policeman, a secret agent, also work for the government or not?

Korra

I guess they're not exactly identical.

Though I also think "occupation" is more broadly applicable. There's people, contexts, and historical circumstances where the term "employment" does not readily apply. I have a lot of characters who do a thing, but their "employment" as such is nonexistent.

For example in the middle ages of Europe, many people had an occupation or trade (e.g. "blacksmith") but not necessarily an employment ("blacksmith in the employ of the King of Prussia").

I would say an accountant in the employment of the government has a financial occupation, though I'd also say they have financial employment. They're employed to do financial stuff. I'd pick based on what they're doing rather than based on their employer. That's me though.

Desdemona Fireheart

Sure. A succubus also has an occupation. The question is if I want this broader definition or just the work the character does to live from it. Hephaestus is a smith, this is his occupation. But being a god is also an occupation. Or take Indiana Jones. His employment is "teacher" but his occupation is "adventurer".

Scourge

why not just say it's an employment?

Scourge

there's a line for "additional details" for a reason, you can explain whether it's really a job or occupation. But Just keeping 'Employment" as a trait isn't appropriate, which is the point of this feedback.

Jolt the Umbreon

Would career perhaps be a better alternative?

Scourge

career also implies a job (usually long term)

Korra

Lots of things aren't careers, which is about your long-term journey. People who do a wide variety of jobs don't have a specific career in any of them, though their job at the current point is accurately called their occupation.

Job and line of work sorta work? I feel that occupation works best of all the terms mentioned so far.

Desdemona Fireheart

Occupation, profession, work, job.
