Feedback ยท Persistent logs for public channels. (needs discussion)

related to Chat Archive

I would like to have an option for persistent logs for public channels, a log list for everything said, every day. The logs could be sorted by date.

This feature would solve a lot of problems the site is experiencing, and has experienced in the past. It would also serve as a nice reward for people who roleplay in public channels, as it enables them to go back later and save the logs for themselves even if they forgot to in the heat of the moment.

Administration action in public channels is made difficult when incidents occur when the room moderators are not around. The logs of incidents disappear before moderators can arrive so they have to rely on the retelling of events from a user's perspective, partially copied logs, or in some cases a user may have actually used the save log feature, though that is uncommon. Getting logs from a user also leaves logs open to being edited in some way, which was an issue in the past.

A persistent log would also make clear defamation attempts, as a server side log of events could be logged server-side, reviewed, and archiving important moments for later would be much simpler. Instead of downloading whole text files, you could just have 1 txt with important dates listed in it. If it is liked, one could even change the download logs button to a "favorite date" button, which would automatically add the date to the list of dates in some litphoria-produced txt. (This may be a separate feature to request.)

Persistent logs organized by date for channels would allow easier review of incidents, and easier access to public roleplays participants would like to save if they forget to do it at the time.

I agree with this.

I download logs habitually when there's incidents, and there are many incidents where the beginning of the context will have happened over a hundred messages ago and actually be outside the logs by the time the area of the log we'd call "the incident" happens. Sometimes, I'd need to stitch together 2-3 full logs to convey the whole conversation, but I only have those if I started saving once trouble was brewing. Messages also reliably get cleared out of active chats in half an hour or more, so if a mod arrives even a bit late, solid evidence of any wrongdoing has been wiped out.

When people are roleplaying in a public channel, chances are the beginning of the roleplay is gone before it's ended.

A while back, messages were deleted after just a day or two because certain users were uncomfortable with the idea of messages being kept longer than that, but it was doing enough of a disservice to existing users that messages got deleted independently of a time limit. That was a good change.

Now, we have a 200-message limit for some reason or another, but that is also doing roleplayers and moderation a disservice.

I don't mind a 200-message limit inside the chat itself, but it would help to have an accessible archive that goes back a couple of days.

This was suggested back in June of last year and it's been accepted. If you'd like to see it sooner, go and throw more endorsement points at it. Since that feedback item is old though, this one will be kept at Needs Discussion in case anyone wants to pitch in advice on just how it'll be implemented.
