Feedback ยท Integrated Random Chance System (implemented)

I think something that would be cool is a way for players to have the website decide things from them, using a random chance system. This would probably take the form of something similar to rolling dice, flipping coins and spinning the bottle as seen on other sites and chat clients. Personally, I quite enjoy leaving some parts of the RP up to chance, such as if a character notices something easy to miss or if an attack connects and so on. It can get a little annoying if you and your RP partner(s) want to introduce chance into the play and have to either use physical objects to do so, in which case the results can be easily fudged, or using an external website (which can still be fudged, but you could ask for screenshots, I suppose).

I keep going back and forth on whether I'll just have a roll system or let you dictate how your post changes based on that roll as well. Example:

She lunges at the scary monster.
/roll 1d9
/when roll = 0
Her sword drops out of her hand, leaving her vulnerable!
/when roll > 1
Her attack plunges the monster's heart and kills it.

I think at first at least I'm going to limit this scope to just having /rolls instead of the whole post modification stuff. Will go from there if there's a need for further.

@Avent

Hmm, I'm not really sold on the idea of rolls dynamically modifying your posts. That seems like two or more times the effort for only one times the payback, if you understand what I'm saying. For longer posts, that could get very lengthy and unnecessary. Perhaps there could be possibly a separate field for the rolls? I know for me, it can get annoying to start typing out a response, then realize you need to roll for something, so you copy the half-finished post, do the roll, then paste the post back in and finish it up.

Perhaps if the system allows a sort of 'Scripting' feature. Something you do on a RP (and can copy to another) that allows to make it shorter. But that would require also the possibility for built-in variables, which could theorically be annoying, but something could be doable. He brandishes his sword, and then shouts out, "Worry not, damsel in distress, I will protect you!" and launches himself to the ennemy to $Attack$! In that case, the $Attack$ would run a script, comparing the random against multiple choices, and then imputing that result.

Otherwise, just the ability to roll dices would be enough, but as a box outside of the normal play.

Hm, interesting. I would not have guessed to put a roll in another field separate from the play itself. Would everyone prefer a 'free entry' kind of box with a specific syntax (more powerful) or some dropdowns that let you pick what kind of dice (less error-prone)?

Pascal

a text box would be more powerful. You could enter values like /roll 3d6 or /flip (Heads or Tail!)

Chausk

I agree with having a text box. If people fuck up the syntax, they can just re-enter it correctly, but there's not much they can do about less power. It would also be cool if one could perform multiple /roll commands simultaneously and add them or subtract them and so on, all in one go, as I find I have to do that often. That aside, I don't think a "/flip" command is necessary. You could just do "/roll 1d2" for the exact same effect. And like I said in the opening post, a "spin the bottle" command could be useful for randomly picking a person that's involved in the play. Perhaps also have some variables with it as well, like the normal "/spin" and a "/spin all" so that it can includes the spinner as well. Maybe even a "/spin x3" to choose three random people. And there could even be a list of characters that people add onto when they enter the play, that you then could just click to add the names onto the spin. But I feel that could be another new feature suggestion in itself.

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

I feel a "spin" functionality is out of scope, and push comes to shove, could just be replicated by doing doing one dice roll with as many faces as there are people in the play.

Pascal

I have done a dice roller a while back on IRC using a regex-friendly syntax. It answers to text like 2d10+1d20+12-1d6 which the system translates to: twice 1 to 10 + 1 to 20 + 12, minus 1 to 6. Not sure if I can find the regex code however... That's a bit of program I lost a while back :-/

Chausk

@Avent Yeah, that's a good point.

A thought occurred: do we consider rolls OOC, thus subject to being hidden by the 'view IC only'?

That is what I was thinking.
