Jaime

Pretty sure there's already a Trait —> Setting —> Tribal for this.

Jaime

In that case, a title of "Low-Tech" seems less confusing to me.

This is an interest? It should be a category on the setting trait. And consider that these are the same labels for searching --- so I don't really see a lot of people typing in "primitivism" (especially when my chrome considers that a spelling error)

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

Well, the categories are not exact values. They're general representations. We're just identifying useful patterns for a setting, like tribal, modern, or this otherwise civilized-but-low-tech.

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

Yeah that's not at all what I gathered from your suggestion. Can you describe exactly what you mean?

Jaime

My main aversion to this is the word, "Primitivism." It's a bit awkward, and it's not one I immediately associate with the concept of "otherwise-civilised-but-low-tech." That being said, this seems like a useful Setting category (hell I'd add it to my alt right now!) But... yeah, search terms are a thing.

Low Tech
Settings in which technology is not readily available, or is non-existent.

... Would that be a satisfactory title / description instead, Loki?

Jaime

Wow my internet went out and I was replying to something way back there, sorry.

Wrecked Avent Site Administrator

That is at least an act instead of an attribute (so it would be an interest) but yeah, finding a useful label to it is now the challenge. The closest thing that comes to mind to me is gentrification but that has both political and other connotations that we don't really want.

Jaime

Some label ideas:

Displacement
Culture Shock
Culture / Societal Difference

A cursory Google search didn't yield much for ideas. Gotta love how the English language contains more words than almost any other on the planet, yet it's so hard to find the right one sometimes... ;P

Jaime

Here's the best solution I can think of...
Traits —> Settings —> "Low Tech" (as I defined it previously)
With an Interest in:

Displacement
Expresses an interest in roleplay in which a character will be removed from a familiar setting or culture and placed into one which is unfamiliar to them.

The interest could then be customized by the user to specifically state it's more an interest in tech differences, which might be inferred already from the character's trait of "Low Tech." I suggest it this way because "Displacement" could apply to lots of different scenarios. A modern character moving to another country, for instance, which has nothing to do with technology.
