Feedback ยท Place latest posts and posting field at the top of RPs... (solved)

... Not at the bottom. I have to scroll down constantly to view new posts in roleplays, and in an active chat this is beyond irritating. Oldest last, newest first, posting field at the top or right under the latest post (with history underneath posting field) would be preferred. Text entry at the top of the page, I should not have to scroll down to find it or watch it jitter as new posts are added. It's critical to be able to see the latest post while I type my reply also, so having the avatars and all that empty space separating the text entry box from the posts (so I can't see them while I type) is crippling.

In general, things need to be compacted in roleplays, minimizing empty space between posts and post boxes, in order to maximize visibility.

Personally I don't mind it being from oldest to newest, but I completely agree re: space between the most recent post and the text entry field. I need to be able to see the last post as I'm writing in order to accurately reference it while writing my own.

This is not exactly an easy solution. I have zero reason to believe newest-oldest would do anything but confuse anyone who's ever used a roleplaying site like ... ever, and moving the post order moves any typing notifications off screen.

What about moving the involved characters box to the top and the session connect box underneath the posting field? That would help immensely, imo.

Moving the involved characters box pretty much anywhere moves the typing notifications off screen. That might be okay if people are telling me they're not that worried about other people typing when they're making a post but I'm not entirely sure that's the case.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I care a lot less about if someone else is typing than I do about seeing the last post. The former is something I don't mind scrolling to check on, but the latter is.

My idea of a solution would involve making the site less phone friendly (unless somehow you can do Phone Detection or something) ... Move the 'active players' field to a 'table' on the left or right of the screen, and keep the RP flowing in rest of the screen. So Icons and 'Who is Typing' is always visible, but not in the way of the RPing. Also, in the case of an RP, you could maybe do 'page jumps' so that when loading the page, it automatically scrolls to the last post you made? Just an idea, but ... probably doesn't belong here. Of course, the one issue that my solution would offer is making the site less 'phone compatible' ...

It'll be something worth investigating if people don't feel typing status is as necessary for them. I'll play with the layout of things a bit and see.

A lot of these issues have been at least addressed; new posts now auto-focus if you had focus before, scrolling should be a bit better, the UI has been massively inlined and minified; post orders (participants/typing notifications) have been moved to the top

I am considering this resolved after talking with some people who commented here about it.
