Feedback ยท Image Viewer ('lightbox') on Profiles (accepted)

This makes sure the player stays on the profile without being forwarded to the image itself, then having to go 'back' to the profile. #firstworldproblems

Here's a mockup. As with all my mockups, I did with photoshop and is just proof of concept, not the final draft. And yeah, the image would be bigger but I wanted to show that the rest of the profile would be down below still if someone clicked the image they wanted to see. Could also include captions.

EDIT: On viewing said mockup, I realize it's similar to how slimCat does the image biz on profiles. Ace.

EDIT 2: Adding Velus' idea and thinking lightboxes can be disabled per user. An account setting (not profile) could be 'enable lightboxes for all images'. That would be great for RP if someone links to an image (direct link) in a pose. That way I can click and view in the same page without having my browser jump forward. But for those who want their browser to do it, it can be enabled or disabled in the account CP.

There's a lot of available and open source lightbox packages that have browser-like tools to zoom in, ect.

I actually enjoy not having a lightbox.

For images with large dimensions, it means I can open the image in my browser and let my browser handle it with the zoom-in and zoom-out functions I'm used to.

For images with large file sizes, it means I can just open the image in a new tab, and then keep reading the profile and move to the image when I'm ready for it and I can see it's loaded. With a lightbox, I have to click and then wait for however long for it to load, and have my profile reading obstructed in the meantime (or not worth continuing, because it'll get interrupted at any moment by a lightbox).

Some sites handle providing both with one particular trick, and if lightboxes get implemented here, I'd like to see this trick implemented too:

  • The image remains a regular image link, exactly as normal. You can middle- or right-click it to open the image in a new tab.
  • The image also has a mouse-click event handler on it which responds exclusively to left mouse button clicks by opening a lightbox. (It ignores all other mouse buttons.)

That lets us have both available.

I use hoverzoom because it's fabulously useful for this sort of thing and doesn't require sites to develop a complicated light box control (which most don't).

I might add this, but the utility-payoff ratio seems kind of low here. The main value I see in this is making it easier to have images with captions, or later, having images linked to particular artists.

Would it be easier? Certainly, it'd be a five minute job to make them open in a new tab. I don't think that was the intent of this though.

This is on the list of nice things that aren't high on the list of priorities, though how much endorsements it gets could change that.
