Feedback ยท Change the definition of Stockholm Syndrome (closed)

tldr? I hate it, it doesn't define what it says it does at all.

Right now it's defined as "Expresses an interest in befriending someone who would ordinarily be hated." which may cover any number of situations which are definitely not Stockholm. Stockholm Syndrome has three major characteristics which much be met:

  • The hostage(s) have negative feelings about authorities.
  • The hostage(s) have positive feelings toward their captor(s).
  • The captor(s) develop positive feelings toward the hostage(s).

Not one of those is addressed in the definition it has now, which makes it far too broad to be of much use for what it says it is. At the moment, it could be referring to anything from making friends with a rival through normal means to the actual captor(or abuser)/hostage situations it applies to.

Alternatively it could use one of these:

  • Expresses an interest in play in which a hostage begins to identify with and grow sympathetic to their captor.
  • Expresses an interest in play in which hostages identify and sympathize with their captors on whom they depend for survival.
  • Expresses an interest in play in which the emotional involvement that occurs between hostage and perpetrator is central.

The definition that it has now should be applied to some broader interest. Frenemies? Coopetition? Some word that doesn't sound made up, perhaps?

I'd meant to bring all this up in the feedback for adding Stockholm Syndrome, but I was too late with my concerns. And this might be better anyway; it can still be used while people tell me how wrong I am!

I've marked this as needs discussion, as obviously some people thought the definition that was reached was adequate.

WA: Or they were more concerned with endorsing the interest, and didn't look too closely at how general the description was.

I still really don't like it being called "Stockholm syndrome" full stop. It sits very awkwardly on interest lists and is even more weird to type.

I'm considering this closed with "bonding" being added to the list. (I'll also be removing the interest this is talking about)
