Feedback · Hide ads from specific characters forever (in review)

This is an extension of the following feedback: I want to be able to hide specific ads. Accordingly, this is assuming we can hide specific ads...

A remaining matter is: what if all of a particular character's ads are awful? For example, they're primarily here for rape roleplays or other themes which I find deeply offputting. If they chronically post ads I dislike, being able to hide all their ads would be beneficial.

It shouldn't be offered straight away though. We all advertise for a variety of things and it'd suck to be perma-ignored for just one ad. It'd discourage variety lest we risk getting perma-ignored for weird stuff by people who might otherwise enjoy the rest of our stuff. (This is a real effect that will really happen and really discourage people for real to everyone's detriment, I promise.)

So I suggest a "hide all ads from this character forever" but with a twist: it only shows up after we hide, like, five different ads from the same user. Once we do, we see a message like this where the ad was:

you've ignored several ads from CHARACTER. do you want to hide all ads from them forever? yes · no

Ignoring it is considered a "no". But if we do actually pick an option, we'll see one of these:

ok, hiding all ads from CHARACTER forever. undo
or
ok, we'll keep showing CHARACTER's ads. undo

Undo lets me go back because we all know misclicks happen.

If I pick no it'll ask again after another five hides.

On a reasonable request I split this away from the original suggestion, so this can be discussed separately. It occurs to me that "hide forever" should maybe not be a thing, "hide for a few months" (three?) could be viable but still has risks if we want a feature along these lines to exist at all.

Probably best waiting 'til after we've already had "hide this ad" for a while to see if we even need to do this.

.

I don't see why users shouldn't have the power to ignore at will from the beginning, if they're gonna be given that power. If ads upset me enough that they need to be hidden, then Iprobably want the option to hide a big chunk of ads that will potentially upset me, and it should be up to me if I make thewchoice to hide a whole user.

I'm into a lot of different things myself, and have various fantasies along the lines of exhibitionism as well as gory stuff. The latter might offend someone and they should probably hide that stuff, but some of my best exhibitionism roleplay partners are people who're chill with me being into those things, even if they don't wanna do 'em.

Astarte brought up in the original suggestion the idea of just ignoring by tag which I think is way more convenient and effective.

.

Oh yeah. Ignoring by tag and encouraging good tagging is a great idea! And I wasn't saying all ads should be hidden from someone in response to one hidden ad, just that I feel the power should be in the user's hands. If a user who hides all ads from someone misses out on some good RP because of their decision to take that risk, so be it. IMO

Whilst I agree with that, there's another factor to consider: whether people would ever want to make those risky ads if there was a possible "be hidden forever by people who might find you pretty cool if they saw a different ad of yours" consequence available. So, that perma-ignore could serve to discourage a lot of people from making unusual ads.

Like here: I'm into a lot of vanilla stuff. I make one gore or noncon ad and suddenly I'm on the blacklist of half the people into vanilla who don't want to see that stuff on their front page. D'you think I'd ever make a gore or noncon ad under those circumstances? Unlikely, too risky.

.

Hmm, well honestly I wouldn't even offer hide all ads from a person. I'd instead build that into an ignore feature, and describe it as such, and then it should only be used in extreme cases. And regardless of how ad hiding works, I imagine an ignore feature is desirable and would hide ads as part of it anyway...

Samus

That sounds pretty viable too depending on how the ignore feature shapes out. (I say that 'cause most sites have a size-limited ignore list so you can't just go nuts.) So, hide specific ads + hide tags + ignore people which hides their ads, at a basic level, would cover a lot of good stuff.
