So I discussed this in the Marvel universe canon,
I suggest like the catagorys we have sub canons. So you figure out whats the begining one. So I suggest a main canon then the others. It might look something like this.
Fantasy>(may need broad terms like appoclyptic, or otherwise likely will have a "other" option in here for something like a small canon like dragonheart.)>Dungeons and dragons. Maybe>timeline/campaign.
There might be a better way to do this but.. say the DC universe.. theres Super Man, Batman, The green lantern, Justice League.. and various other offshoots.. so your search terms might just be "DC universe." Or "DC universe fanon" but they can catagorize it... this is just an idea and I know what I stated wont be put it. This is up solely for discussion.

I was thinking initially about having a hierarchy for canons. So in this specific scenario there would be "Marvel" or "Marvel universe" (whichever is more native to people using it), and then there'd be "Marvel Universe (Comics)" or "Marvel Universe (Cinematic)" or what have you, which would be marked as children. If you searched for "Marvel" you'd get all of the sub canons, but if you just searched for one of the sub canons, you'd only get those (with possibly a little link asking if you meant to search for the whole shebang).
The main problem I have with this is it's ridiculously complicated and would swell the canon list substantially. But maybe that's what is needed in this case? In the other suggestion people indicated they wouldn't want to play necessarily with someone else just because they were part of a greater universe - only in their specific version of the canon. If this is true then it's a useful thing to do, even if it creates some ... bloat? The pruning will likely to have to be more aggressive here to just avoid people creating sub canons because they can. Only ones that are meaningfully used by people in that canon or outside of it to distinguish which they like.
I also had an idea to have a character list if they were crossovers between two canons but yeah that'd be even more confusing.
This is mainly up for discussion, its just for ideas but I agree it would be bloated as hell.. but what can you do besides only force the main titles.. which leaves anyone who wants to play in the apocolyptic Sonic timeline in the dust. (yes there is one)
I feel like we're going to need more canon characters on the site before we'll get meaningful discussion about this.
After much time has passed, I believe ultimately we will tend towards specificity and categorize appropriately, like we are doing now with traits, and will do with interests. These sub-canons will just become the categorization for canons.
