Feedback ยท Profile Inspirations (templating) (accepted)

master of 1 children

I would like to see inspirations added to profile creation (and possibly edit). Inspirations would be small snippets of a character's personality that can apply to multiple characters at a time. These may be only a profile-creation helper or might end up being listed on the profile itself somewhere near the top so you can get a super quick idea of the profile that way.

This would be added probably near the top of the profile creation, just above 'traits'. It would be another drop down, "insiprations". Clicking it would expand a list similar to others, only instead of things like sex of female, You'd get submissive in the bdsm sense. Clicking on that would then auto-populate your profile with no more than a few traits, interests, and preferences.

So example, I expand insiprations and click on submissive in the bdsm sense. To my new profile the following traits are added:

  • d/s role of submissive
  • top/bottom role of bottom

And the following preferences:

  • positive preference for d/s role of dominant, negative preference for submissive
  • positive preference for top/bottom role of top, negative preference for bottom

And some interests:

  • collaring is added to 'likes'
  • bondage is added to 'likes'
  • punishment is added to 'likes'

Then I could click on other interests, such as maybe masochist to add a bunch of pain-related interests to my 'likes'.

Additionally, when viewing this profile, there might be a list near the top of their inspirations. If you saw a list like: bdsm in the submissive sense, masochist, foot fetishist, boyish girl, dong lover, you'd have a pretty good idea of what to expect on the profile before you even read anything about it.

Presumably these would also be community-added like everything else.

Profile templates for faster character creation, especially with respect to RP systems/universes/genres

How about not filling out the profile but just make a preselections? Highlighting buttons. If I choose "Woman" as a general "Inspiration" all four female gender-traits are highlighted. I look over it and click a "Choose preselected" button. So if I choose "Human" I wont have to choose "plantigrade feet", "human sex", "human species", "human skin" particularly. Maybe the "inspiration" should not be on top but next to the name of the sub-category.

This is useful, but it misses one of the reasons templating would even be useful to me in the first place. There are some things I am never into. I am having to click these same 12 things every single time I make a new profile. I'd wager I'm not the only person who has a core set of no-gos, some of which might be quite a bit longer. It is frustrating and makes the process of character creation feel way more repetitive than it should have to. It's not that my characters are carbon copies of one another, either. It's just that I as a player just don't like certain things, full stop, and need to make that clear on all of my sheets.

And the same can likely be said of a player's core interests. Most people know what they like, and while my preferences do vary from character to character, there's a strong foundation. Right now, that means -- yet again -- just clicking the same stuff over and over again. I find I don't really save any time with the process of "likes/dislkes -> separate into categories after," either, because it makes for a ton of extra clicking. I also have to look at this big huge list of things and then go through the mental process of "which of these was supposed to go where, again?" when the answer, for many traits, is "the same place it went last time."

@Solara: But for this it makes more sense to have a "copy traits" feature like the "copy kinks" feature at F-List. Then you can create a standard profile and copy it as base for all your chars.

Solara Silverdawn

@Desdemona That would work fine and is quite similar to the idea of user-created templates as suggested in the child post for this one (it just copies directly from a character instead of a saved template). I'd personally find user-created templates easier because my characters do differ, so just copying over all traits from one to the other would usually require a lot of cleanup. More unnecessary clicking. I'd be okay with it, though.

Desdemona Fireheart

Not if you create a "standard profile" or "basic profile" what only contains the traits which are equal for all your chars. Why make a second template editor if the char editor works fine for this?

Solara Silverdawn

It runs the risk of junking up the search results if everyone does that, especially when the search returns only a limited number of results. People looking for characters to actually play with run the risk of missing the actual characters. It is a workable solution, though.

Solara Silverdawn

Hmm, possibility: use the normal character creator to make the "basic profile," but save it with a special Basic Profile status that clearly designates it as such and hides it from searches. I think that would be fine.

Desdemona Fireheart

Then you need a "not searchable" or "invisible" check-box. Also useful if you are not in the mood to play with a certain character but don't want to delete it.

Solara Silverdawn

That'd cover all my concerns. :)

The intent here is not to simplify you creating multiple similar profiles. It is to solve a particular use case when creating a new profile, and also to simplify searching for several combinations of traits together. Copying will be used for similar profiles, likely in combination with writer profiles.

Solara Silverdawn

No, but the original template suggestion this superceded would have accomplished simplifying multiple profiles, whereas this system does not. Because that template suggestion worked the way I would have suggested one for easier repeat character creation, I figured that creating another feedback suggestion would have been a duplicate. Apologies if I should have posted new feedback instead. I also hadn't thought of copying, and I didn't know writer profiles were going to be a thing. That sounds like a totally viable solution.
